Open Access to Peer-Reviewed Book Publications
In accordance with the Berlin Declaration, the FWF requires all project heads and project participants to publish any peer-reviewed publications resulting in whole or in part from projects funded by the FWF in an online, open-access format.
For peer-reviewed book publications:
I. Open Access Options
Option 1: Open-Access Publication
Open access to book publications can be ensured through direct open access publication (e.g. with a publisher) with a Creative Commons license. The Creative Commons license Attribution (CC BY) should be chosen. The Creative Commons License Attribution - Non-Commercial (CC BY-NC) may also be used.
Funding for this can be applied for from the Stand-Alone Publications program.
Option 2: Open-Access Archiving of the Book Publication
Open access can also be ensured by self-archiving the publisher's version or the accepted manuscript1 in a registered institutional, discipline-specific, or open-discipline repository (see OpenDOAR). Works can be archived in the FWF E-Book Library (see Metadata form (docx, 172KB)). Self-archiving must be done under a Creative Commons license after a maximum embargo period of 12 months.
No FWF funding is available for time-delayed open access publication.
II Acknowledgement
The following text must be included in all publications resulting from FWF projects: "Austrian Science Fund (FWF) [Grant number]"
III. Archiving
If “Option 1: Open-Access Publication” is selected, the publisher or the author(s) must also provide an accessible PDF/A of the publication and information about the metadata for long-term archiving in the FWF E-Book Library.
The Metadata form required for inclusion in the FWF E-Book Library can be found here (docx, 172KB).
IV. Publication Costs
Funding to cover the costs of stand-alone publications such as monographs, proceedings, or edited volumes can be applied for from the Stand-Alone Publications program.
V. Special provision for edited volumes and proceedings
- The entire edited volume or the proceedings are considered a project result if the editor is the principal investigator or a project participant, or if the edited volume or proceedings are the result of a conference organized as part of a project funded by the FWF. Funding can be applied for from the Stand-Alone Publications program.
- A single contribution in an edited volume or in proceedings is considered a project result if the principal investigator or project participants publish their contributions in an edited volume or in proceedings edited by another person. Funding can be applied for under Peer-reviewed Publications.
- If “Option 2: Open-Access Archiving of the Book Publication” is selected for open access publication, the following exemption applies: Only those contributions written by the principal investigator or project participants needs to be published in an open-access format, not the entire edited volume or proceedings.
VI. Documentation
Open-access activities and compliance with the FWF’s Open Access Policy must be documented in the Final Project Report to the FWF. This is done by means of a persistent identifier through which the full text of the publication can be viewed, read, and downloaded. For further information, please see Research Documentation.
VII. Further outputs
For information on open-access options for other forms of research output, please see the Open Access Policy.

1 The open-access version should, if possible, include the full text, all images, figures, tables, indices, and other supporting content. If this is not possible for legal reasons, illustrations, third-party materials, etc. may be blacked out and references provided. Archived accepted manuscripts must contain a note that they are not the publisher’s final published version.
