What should be considered with regard to ongoing projects with cooperation partners in Russia?

For all ongoing research projects with cooperation partners in Russia, the FWF points out the obligation to comply with the terms of European and national sanctions imposed on Russian institutions and individuals, as well as regarding technical and scientific support in general. The implementation of FWF projects is subject to the relevant rules of the Austrian research institution in question; therefore, you must contact the competent office of the research institution in question before carrying out any cooperation activities.

The rules of the research institution in question also apply to individual scientific contacts with researchers in Russia.

Can applications (including resubmissions) be submitted to the FWF if they provide for cooperation with researchers working at Russian research institutions?

Applications that include plans for cooperation with researchers at Russian research institutions cannot be submitted until further notice. The FWF is aware of the consequences of suspending individual researchers from being able to submit applications and regrets the restriction in terms of the exchange and international cooperation within the scientific community.

Can applications be submitted to the FWF within the framework of internationally coordinated research collaborations or research activities at major international research institutions with the participation of Russian organisations?

In principle, such applications can be submitted, as long as there is no direct cooperation with researchers at Russian research institutions in the course of the research activities. The rules of the major international research institution in question apply.

Will the FWF launch bilateral calls for proposals with the Russian Science Foundation (RSF) in the near future?

No. The FWF has suspended cooperation with the Russian Science Foundation until further notice.

Can cost-neutral extensions be granted for ongoing projects with Russian cooperation partners?

Yes, such extensions may be granted in accordance with the provisions of the grant agreements in question and in consideration of the points stated above.

Can researchers from Russia working at an Austrian research institution also submit applications to the FWF in future?

Yes. Submission of applications to the FWF remains open to applicants regardless of citizenship.

Can researchers from Russia submit applications as grant-salaried principal investigators for a research project planned at an Austrian research institution?

Yes, they may do so in accordance with the application requirements of the programmes in question.

Will the FWF continue to have reviewers from Russia review project proposals?

No. The FWF does not have reviewers from Russia review project proposals at present.
