It is possible to postpone a project start for up to 18 months after notifying the responsible FWF project officers.

Schrödinger: Can the return phase be extended if the research work cannot be completed within the project duration due to the coronavirus crisis?

A return phase can be extended for up to 12 months in a cost neutral way if the extent of employment is reduced. We would ask you to send us a free-form request that includes an explanation of why you need to extend the project as well as the duration of the planned extension. Please send this request via email to your FWF project officer and, following approval, inform the responsible research institution of the extension.

Schrödinger: Can I begin the return phase earlier than planned if the research work abroad cannot be continued due to Covid-19 and the abroad phase has just started or is only halfway completed?

There are several options for starting the return phase. You can end the abroad phase early, so you can start with the return phase (also partly). Please send your request via email to your responsible project officer and inform the return-phase research institution about this.

Schrödinger: Can funding for “other costs” (non-personnel costs) be used to extend a Schrödinger return phase?

Yes, funding for “other costs” may be reallocated to cover personnel costs for the purpose of extending the project. We would ask you to send us a free-form request that includes an explanation of why you wish to extend the project as well as the duration of the planned extension. Please send this request via email to your FWF project officer and, following approval, inform the responsible research institution of the extension.

Schrödinger: Can the Rückenwind funding bonus be used during the return phase?

Due to the global spread of the coronavirus, travel warnings currently apply to many countries. As long as there are such restrictions, the Rückenwind funding bonus can also be spent during the return phase for knowledge transfer activities and international networking.
