The International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers (STM) has recently released model licenses for Open Access which are intended to regulate the right of authors and (re-) use of digital scientific results.
Via an open letter more than 85 organisations (mainly publishers, libraries and NGOs) have asked STM to withdraw these model licenses. Their criticism is that with the Creative Commons license a simple and established standard already exists. Furthermore, the STM licensing models confuse and restrict the use and re-use of scientific results significantly. This criticism is also supported by the very insightful comments of the Wellcome Trust and the Max Planck Digital Library.
The FWF shares these concerns on the STM licensing models. Accordingly, the FWF Open Access Policy will continue to require the use of Creative Commons licenses and not of the STM licensing models.
